This post is for teachers and parents to help engage kids in learning more about Women's History Month through various activities. Choose up to 3 to put into action this year to celebrate Women's History Month and recognize the contributions of women over the years.
Women's History Month takes place in March every year. The movement to celebrate the contributions of women everywhere took root in the 1970s and grew over the years. Since 1995, U.S. presidents have proclaimed March a month to celebrate and recognize "the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields." What started as Women's History Week transformed into Women's History Month!
Educators, such as teachers, school administrators, counselors, and parents, have taken it upon themselves over the last few decades to teach the younger generations about this month-long event and what it means for humanity. What students learn can be empowering and highly meaningful to them in their life's journey.
As Women's History Month approaches, start planning and getting organized with what you want to do to celebrate with students. Consider some of the activities and ideas listed. Start planning ahead for what you want to do at your school site or home.
If you are a teacher, school administrator, counselor, or parent, consider each of the ideas for celebrating Women's History Month shared here. Use up to 3 of the ideas and activities. You can begin with 1 to 3 this year and add more in the years ahead.

Besides fundraising, other activities can help the local community, like blood donation events, community cleanup events, and even food collection events in honor of Women's History Month. Students can use the opportunity to help give back to the community.

Even if you only have 5 categories selected this year, you can add more and more each year and grow the gallery walk. Pick a day when classes can be brought in to see the displays. Have students complete a short reflection at the end of the gallery walk to help them jot down some of what they learned after the gallery walk.
Start planning and getting organized with ways to recognize and celebrate Women's History Month at your school, or at home. Use some of the ideas presented in this article and make changes as you see fit. Do what works for your school as an educator, or at home as a parent. Show kids the importance of honoring women's contributions and sacrifices to the way of life in the United States.
